University of Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) is a leading research facility driving productivity and sustainability gains in the energy, resources, food, and water sectors. Established in 2010 with funding from the Australian Government and the NSW Government, NIER brings together multidisciplinary teams of experts to develop transformational solutions for sectors of national significance.

Located at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus, NIER’s NIER Precinct encompasses specialized research facilities, including mineral, chemical, and technical laboratories, pilot plant workshops, and demonstration units.
